AmCham Special Luncheon - Japan’s Massive Earthquake – Assessing the Impact PDF Print E-mail

Date: Tuesday, 19 April 2011

On March 11 2011, a deadly earthquake and tsunami struck the northeast region of Japan causing extensive and severe economic damage. Japanese Prime Minister Naoto Kan, amidst the growing risk of a partial nuclear meltdown, deemed the disaster to be the most difficult crisis for the nation in the 65 years since WW II. This heightened concern whether the government will be able to avert a significant weakening of an already fragile economic recovery. Of even greater concern is the country’s relative importance in terms of its share of global trade. Indeed, the continuing power outages resulting from the massive earthquake have led many to fear prolonged disruption to the technology supply chain, which would have serious ramifications for several major Asian tech exporters, including Taiwan. It also adds to concerns about the overall prospects for global economy in light of surging oil and commodity prices as a result of on-going unrest in major oil producing countries in Africa and the Middle East.

AmCham is honored to invite Mr. Tony Phoo, economist for Standard Chartered Bank (Taiwan) Limited, to share his views on the recent disaster in Japan and its potential economic impact.
