The U.S. Internal Revenue Service (IRS) has increased its scrutiny of multinational corporations and wealthy private individuals seeking to minimize their taxes in potentially inappropriate ways during these challenging economic times. Among its most significant international compliance issues, the IRS has cautioned it will closely monitor disclosures of foreign payments and accounts going into the 2009 tax filing season, and stressed that U.S. taxpayers could face stiff penalties for noncompliance. Accordingly, any U.S. person (including U.S. citizens and residents) with foreign investment activities should ensure their compliance with pertinent international tax reporting requirements during the upcoming filing season. This presentation by Jane Cheung of PricewaterhouseCoopers will address the key issues a U.S. person should be aware of and be prepared for further IRS scrutiny.
