Date: Friday, 04 September 2009

The Chambers are delighted to have Mr. Tony Phoo, Economist of standard Chartered Bank (Taiwan) Limited as our special guest speaker for this Luncheon, titled “Prospecting mainland China financial market from a Taiwan perspective”

The resumption of cross-straits dialogue over the past one year and a half has resulted in significant improvement in economic ties between the two sides. Other than opening up to mainland Chinese tourists, as well as agreements allowing for direct cross straits links, the Taiwan government has recently also begin to allow for mainland Chinese direct investment.

Meantime, there is high expectation that cross-straits economic ties could further strengthen, particularly in the area of banking and financial services after delegates from Taiwan and mainland China during the third round of cross-straits dialogue agreed in principle to allow for cross-straits banking and financial services.

About the Speaker(s)

Tony joined Standard Chartered Bank (Taiwan) Limited on 7 June, 2007, as economist and covers Taiwan as well as other regional economies, along with other colleagues based in the region.

Based in Taiwan, Tony has ten years of economic research experience spanning across various functions, both in Taiwan and Singapore. He was senior economist for the Fixed Income Department with Capital Securities Corp. Limited between 2003 and 2006. Prior to that, he held similar responsibility in economic research with the Development Bank of Singapore (DBS) and Overseas Chinese Banking Corporation (OCBC) while residing in Singapore. Tony holds a master degree in International Economics, Banking and Finance from University of Wales, Cardiff (UWCC), and obtained his honors degree in Economics with University of London, UK.
