Legislator Chen's father, Chen Jian-nian, was formerly Minister of the Council of Indigenous People. In the 2004 legislative election campaign, Chen Jian-nian was accused of vote-buying among aboriginal tribes for his daughter's campaign. He resigned in March 2005 and was appointed a member of the Taiwan Provincial Council. In October 2005, Chen Jian-nian was convicted and sentenced to 24 months' imprisonment.
