The five decades after 1949 saw a sustained rise in living standards as Taiwan became one of the fastest-growing economies in the world. Often grouped under the broad rubric of “economic globalization,” these challenges include manufacturing job loss, intense pressure to develop cutting edge technologies, competition for a limited pool of global investment capital, the need to improve service sector productivity, and the perception of increasing social inequality.
