Following the Democratic Progressive Party's poor showing in last December's local-level elections, many knowledgeable commentators predicted that the party would need to move toward the political center by encouraging greater cross-Strait economic interchange - while equally persuasive pundits argued that the DPP would concentrate on shoring up its base among hard-core supporters suspicious of dealings with China.
