Twice a year TOPICS makes a departure from the magazine's usual business-oriented format to bring out a special edition in a somewhat lighter vein. In February, the theme is Wine & Dine in Taipei. In October we publish the volume you are now holding in your hands, Travel and Culture.

During the two years that TOPICS has been offering these special editions, the response from readers has been overwhelmingly favorable. For those living in Taiwan, the articles provide information and inspiration on what to do and see when leisure hours provide a respite from the call of business. For those overseas, the contents are a guide for planning the next trip to Taiwan, or a means of vicarious enjoyment of what the island has to offer.

For AmCham, these special issues reflect the Chamber's continuing interest - part of the mission defined in its organizational charter - in promoting the betterment of the quality of life in Taiwan for both expatriates and the local citizenry. Quality of life issues include clean air and water, smoothly flowing traffic, and adequate healthcare services, but they also encompass opportunities for entertainment, recreation, and cultural stimulation.

AmCham hopes that our heightened attention to tourism will assist the efforts of the government and the Taiwan travel industry to make even more prospective visitors aware of the scenic, historical, and cultural attractions and opportunities on this island.
