Seminars & Field Trips - AmCham Special Workshop
The Lobbying Act was announced on August 8, 2007 and took effect on August 8, 2008. When Taiwan passed this legislation it joined the United States and Canada as the only governments with lobbying laws. The Act seeks to make lobbying activities more transparent by identifying “who is lobbying whom, for what, and how much are they spending.” If enforced, the Lobbying Act will likely give rise to a cadre of professional lobbyists and, ultimately, could change the way lobbying is done in Taiwan. Since the enactment of this Act, AmCham Taipei has received numerous inquiries from member companies regarding how to best comply with the Act and what implications the Act might bring to member companies in their future lobbying activities with the Taiwan Government. Legal advisors from Baker & McKenzie will share their observations and analyze the potential implications of this Act from legal point of views. About the Speaker(s)Thomas Hand joined Baker & McKenzie in 2007. His practice focuses on corporate counseling. He holds a bachelor's degree in Anthropology from the University of Tennessee (Chattanooga) and a J.D. from Boston College Law School. Before practicing law, Tom was a U.S. Foreign Service Officer and was assigned to posts throughout Africa and on the Arabian Peninsula. From 1980-1982, Tom served as a Peace Corps Volunteer in the northwest African nation of Mauritania. He speaks English and French--and is struggling to learn Mandarin. Stephen Tan is a Partner of Baker & McKenzie’s Taipei office and Co-head of its Foreign Investment Practice. His practice focuses on M&A, private equity, joint venture and cross border corporate transactions and compliances. He is a native of Taiwan and was admitted to practice law in the State of New York and District of Columbia, U.S.A. Stephen graduated from National Taiwan University and University of Pittsburgh School of Law, and has a MBA degree from Carnegie Mellon University. He has been with Baker & McKenzie since 1999. Mr. Tan serves as a Governor of the Board of American Chamber of Commerce Taipei, and chairs its Greater China Business Committee. He also serves as a Board Director of Rotary Club Taipei, and is an active member of Taiwan Corporate Governance Association.
