What is the meaning on “Shanzhai”? Based on the dictionary, it was cottage, independent and could against authority. However, the word was used in Hong Kong in 70’s. In that time, Hong Kong economic growth significantly and light industry was developing from squatter area. These factories were called “Shanzhai Factory” (山寨廠). Now, the word “Shanzhai” was familiar in cell phone. AmCham is honored to invite Mr. Xuan Yan who is the VP of Legal and Government Affairs for Greater China, based in Qualcomm’s Beijing office. During the speech, Mr. Yan will address on the newly emerging Shanzhai Phone (山寨機) issue. He will start with an overview of the Shanzhai market, and introduce its business model with the analysis of Shanzhai Phenomenon, followed by the further discussion about Chinese Government’s reaction on this issue.
About the SpeakerYan Xuan joined Qualcomm in early 2010 as Vice President of Legal and Government Affairs. Besides being responsible for the company’s government relations, policy, legal affairs and IP protection, he also oversees the company’s finance and non-sales related operations in China. Before Qualcomm, Yan Xuan was a Senior Vice President of Scientific Games International (NASDQ Ticker Symbol: SGMS) and President of Scientific Games Greater China. Before that, Yan Xuan was a Vice President at Oracle Corporation championing the company’s Government Affairs and Business Development initiatives for the Greater China Region. Yan Xuan also had an accomplished career in sales, business development, strategic investment and law in both China and the United States with other leading U.S. companies including AT&T/Lucent and Microsoft.
