Special Events - AmCham Special Luncheon
AmCham is pleased to offer the speaker’s podium to Richard Vuylsteke for his Swan Song before leaving five days later to take up his new position as president of AmCham Hong Kong. Swan songs are defined as “a farewell or final appearance” and these are exactly what this luncheon offers. But Richard insists that this will be a luncheon with substance – no tears, moaning & groaning, or whimsical humor. Instead, he will take a lessons-learned approach to his final presentation by discussing a number of key indicators for success for both AmCham and Taiwan as we all look beyond the next election. There will be ample time for Q&A without the presence of media. Please join us in saying farewell to Richard at this event. About the Speaker(s)Richard has been AmCham president (formerly executive director) since August 1999. He has spent more than 40 years in Asia and China-related fields of study and employment. Among other positions, he has been a Fulbright scholar in India, a research fellow at Harvard Law School, assistant director of an Asia-Pacific think tank, and special assistant to the president of the East-West Center. For 12 years he taught courses in Asian history and social, political & legal philosophy, primarily at the University of Hawaii. Richard has resided in Taiwan since August 1986. He taught for 4 years at the U.S. Foreign Service Institute School on Yangmingshan, served 12 years as senior editor of an English-language magazine focused on Taiwan, and has written extensively for publications based in Taiwan, Hong Kong, and the United States. Richard is a Phi Beta Kappa graduate of Illinois College and earned MA and Ph.D. degrees from the University of Hawaii, specializing in Western and Chinese social & political philosophy.
